Folly Beach is our beloved barrier island, just a hop, skip, and a jump from historic Charleston. We’ve got six miles of sandy beaches perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and strolling. The Atlantic waves here are ideal for surfing and paddleboarding, and you’ll often see locals hitting the water at The Washout, our famous surf spot. The Washout gets pretty rowdy during storm swells and windy days, whipping up classic, rolling surf that’s perfect for thrill-seekers.
Rich History
Folly Beach, known as “The Edge of America,” has a history rich with pirates, shipwrecks, and soldiers. The island got its name from its dense forest and undergrowth, referred to as “Folly” in Old English. It’s been home to survivors of shipwrecks, such as those from the Amelia in 1832, and played a strategic role during the Civil War as a base for Federal troops. Folly has also been a cultural hub, with its pier once hosting big bands from Glenn Miller to Maurice Williams. Despite hardships like Hurricane Hugo in 1989, the resilient community of Folly Beach has thrived, transforming into a beloved destination for both residents and visitors.

By boat, you'll be able to visit Morris Island and the iconic Morris Island Lighthouse which, has stood since 1876. Of course, a visit to Folly Beach wouldn’t be complete without dropping by McKevlin’s Surf Shop before heading out to the washout to catch some waves. When it’s time for lunch, grab a bite at Drop in Deli for a delicious sandwich (we recommend the Redneck). For a casual dinner, start with a signature cocktail at Low Life Bar before strolling over to Jack of Cups Saloon for some unique, globally inspired dishes (Leslie is always creating culinary sensations). And of course, Woody’s Pizza is the go-to spot for a fantastic slice. Of course, you can find just about anything you need at Bert's Market - they may doze, but they never close! When the sun sets, the nightlife comes alive with live music and a laid-back atmosphere at Chico Feo, where the local vibe is unbeatable. The eclectic music scene is a big part of our culture, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a local show by Folly Beach-based trio, Dangermuffin. If you love the Carolina Shag, dance the night away under the stars at the Folly Beach Pier during one of our Moonlight Mixers, or join the locals for a Full Moon Drum Circle on the beach.
Folly Beach Traditions

Sea and Sand Festival and Taste of Folly are a few local favorites where the community comes together to showcase the best of Folly! After staying up late to watch the New Year’s Eve Flip Flop Drop (or Woody’s Meatball Drop depending on your vibe), revive yourself at the “Bill Murray look-alike” polar bear plunge where folks dress up as their favorite Bill Murray character and dash into the chilly Atlantic. The motto? “Freeze your balls off!” It’s a quirky, fun event that brings everyone together. You might even spot the real Bill Murray in the crowd, he’s a Charleston local!

Folly Beach is great for families. The kids will love building sandcastles, playing beach volleyball, and exploring the parks. Don’t forget to stop by the Wave Watch or Pirate’s Cove Playgrounds for some swings and slides. While the kids play, the adults can grab a quick game of tennis or pickleball on our newly rennovated courts. During the summer months, the family will love attending Folly Family Fun Night at the Folly River Park. This is a fun evening of music, games, activities, and tastey treats. Have a little angler? Then you won't want to miss Take a Kid Fishing Day on the pier hosted by the Folly Beach Anglers. This family friendly fishing tournament comes with all you need for fishing on the pier.
